Lodeve
is situated less than 30 miles from the vibrant city of Montpellier,
with its museums, galleries, festivals and Place de la Comedie. It is
reached via the A75 (toll-free) motorway which links Clermont Ferrand
in the north to Montpellier in the south. The nearest airports are at
Montpellier, Nimes and Rodez.
The
town is located on the eastern spur of the massif that forms the bulk
of the Parc de Haut Languedoc and is less than 10km away from Lac
du Salagou (windsurfing, boating etc). It boasts a cathedral dating
back to the 13th century, a small museum devoted to a local artist
Darde and a twice weekly market (Tuesday and Saturday). There are many
good bars and restaurants.
Lodeve
is at the heart of good walking country and there is much to explore in
the surrounding area. Not to be missed is an underground visit to the
Grotte de Clamouse, at St Guilhem-le-Desert in the Herault gorge
(canoeing, swimming etc), the 12th century abbey of St Michel de
Grandmont and the Cirque de Navacelles. On the coast, less than an hour
away, is the town of Sete, criss crossed by canals and known as the
Venice of Languedoc: it is renown for its clean sandy beaches and
excellent sea food.
Also
take time to explore many of the “caves” offering locally
produced wines. The production of wine in Languedoc/Roussillon exceeds
that of Australia or Bordeaux and its quality is often medal winning.
There are a number of golf courses within a short drive.
Further afield it is also possible to take a day trip to visit the Cevennes, the Pyrenees and the Camargue.
